Stockwell worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for 13 years, including stints managing an intelligence-gathering post in Vietnam through the fall of Saigon, and as task-force commander of the CIA's 1975-76 secret war in Angola. He quit in 1976 and became the highest-ranking former agent to publicly describe the agency's activities, alleging that CIA Director William Colby lied to Congress, and describing the Agency's "several hundred covert actions a year". He has written two books on the secret activities of the CIA, and says that the CIA toppled functioning democracies in at least 20 countries between the end of World War II and the time that he left the Agency.
