Kelly Rowland AKA Kelendria Trene Rowland Born: 11-Feb-1981 Birthplace: Atlanta, GA
Gender: Female Race or Ethnicity: Black Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Singer Nationality: United States Executive summary: One-third of Destiny's Child While still a child, Kelly Rowland first began to pursue her love of music through singing with a church choir. After moving to Houston with her family, she formed a vocal group with her cousin Beyonce Knowles and two other friends; rehearsing and performing began in earnest to achieve the stardom to which all four girls aspired. But progress of any kind proved elusive, as the group struggled through a succesion of setbacks, false-starts and band names between 1989 and 1997.
In 1997, after a deal with Columbia Records was finally secured (and a name for the group was finally settled upon), success for Destiny's Child arrived with a vengeance. The eponymous debut record went platinum, with its associated single No, No, No reaching #1 on the R&B charts. The follow-up record, 1999's The Writing's on the Wall, fared even better, spawning two more #1 singles. This good fortune, however, was somewhat undermined by internal conflicts that threatened the band's future; by 2000, Kelly and Beyonce were all that remained of the group's original line-up, with Destiny's Child now a trio rounded out by new singer Michelle Williams. The personnel change did nothing to affect sales, and the next album, 2001's Survivor, again surpassed the success of its predecessors.
With the group on hiatus after the release of a Christmas-themed record at the end of 2001, Kelly began work on a solo career. Her first offering was the single Dilemma, a duet with rapper Nelly, which went on to achieve #1 positions on both the U.S. and U.K. singles charts. A full-length album, Simply Deep, saw the light in 2002.
