Made to work in a Nazi labor camp from 1943 until the end of the war, while the rest of his family was sent to Auschwitz. Fled Hungary in 1957, taking up residence first in Cologne (where he made the acquaintance of Karlheinz Stockhausen) and in 1959 in Vienna. Became a naturalized Austrian citizen in 1967.

An excerpt of his works was famously used by Stanley Kubrick in his film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
