Farmer, contractor, and state legislator, elected to US Congress in 2002, succeeding Van Hilleary. Also ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1984, 1994. Conservative "Blue Dog" Democrat � anti-abortion, anti-gay rights, pro-gun rights. Supported 2008 GM/Chrysler bailout, 2009 economic stimulus. Opposed 2008 Wall Street bailout, cap-and-trade legislation, and 2010 health-care reform. Made headlines for his opposition to the 2006 Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have banned gay marriage, because it did not also outlaw adultery and divorce. Lost re-election bid in 2010, and succeeded in Congress by Scott DesJarlais.
