Birthplace: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England

Gender: Male

Executive summary: Alien vs. Predator

Paul W.S. Anderson is a British-born moviemaker, specializing in horror flicks and video game adaptations. His films usually have blaring rock soundtracks, explosive visuals, and hyperspeed MTV editing. Plot and character development are often sacrificed, and detractors suggest that W.S. might stand for "weak script". He is typically compared to Uwe Boll.

As a young man, Anderson wrote for Alfred Molina's British cop show, El C.I.D. He made documentaries, including The Spiral Cage, about a cartoonist who used Buddhist chanting to deal with spina bifida, and Speed, a mildly controversial study of teen criminals. His first feature film, Shopping, was released in 1994. Stylish but under-written (by Anderson), it told a tale of teen violence in a bleak urban future. With Shopping as his calling card, Anderson was hired to direct a movie adaptation of the video game Mortal Kombat. That film was rather tedious, but Anderson later turned another video game, Resident Evil.

In the monster-movie genre, he has directed Event Horizon and Soldier, but by far his biggest hit has been Alien vs. Predator. AvP was a comic book and video game before it was a movie, but Anderson wrote the screenplay, which will certainly increase his Hollywood clout. Anderson has said that AvP was largely inspired by John Boorman's Hell in the Pacific, starring Lee Marvin and Toshir Mifune as two WWII fighter pilots, one American and one Japanese, washed up on a deserted island where the war becomes mano-a-mano.
