Pete Doherty AKA Peter Doherty Born: 12-Mar-1979 Birthplace: Hexham, Northumberland, England
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Bisexual Occupation: Musician Nationality: England Executive summary: Ex-frontman for The Libertines The second of three children born to a strict, Irish-born army major and his a Liverpudlian wife, Pete Doherty spent most of his childhood moving about the UK and Europe as a result of his father's assignments. At the age of 17 he moved away from his family to live with his grandmother in North London -- an environment he prefered to any of the other places in the world he had lived. Pete excelled as a student, achieving top grades and taking the top prize in a poetry competition; this ultimately earned him admission to Oxford University to study English (some sources state it was the University of London), but after his first year he dropped out and moved into a London flat with friend Carl Bart. The two struck up a songwriting partnership, and eventually began performing as an acoustic duo in pubs around 1996. Other musicians moved in and out of the line-up over the next few years, but by 2001 the punk band now known as The Libertines settled into a fixed quartet with drummer Gary Powell and bassist John Hassall.
In 2002 the band signed to the Rough Trade label, and their debut single What A Waster appeared shortly afterwards, its punk-revivalist approach causing a considerable stir in the music press. Their first full-length effort, the Mick Jones-produced Up The Bracket, was released later in the year and received a similarly enthusiastic reception, with comparisions to pioneering punk acts like the Buzzcocks, The Clash and The Sex Pistols being frequently bandied about. Similarities to the latter extended far beyond just the music, in fact: by this time Doherty had whole-heartedly embraced the self-destructive, chemically-drenched lifestyle of the Pistols' Sid Vicious, and seemed to be as dedicated in his intention to send himself to an early grave. With the release of Bracket in the States in early 2003 and the band's appearance at the Coachella Festival, their popularity began to spread across the Atlantic, but by June the situation between Doherty and the rest of The Libertines had degenerated considerably. The troublesome frontman failed to turn up for a scheduled European tour and was expelled from the band as a result.
Doherty's problems with drug addiction and the erratic nature of his behavior only continued to worsen, and not long afterwards he was arrested for burglarizing Carl Bart's apartment while his old bandmate was away on tour. While being given a few months to unwind in prison he managed to patch things up with Bart, and upon his release was welcomed back into the line-up of the Libertines. The reunion -- not surprisingly -- proved short-lived, and after a handful of (sometimes disastrous) shows around the UK and some very difficult sessions for a second album (The Libertines, released in August 2004), Doherty was again expelled from the band until he could overcome his drug problems. A pair of failed attempts at rehab were followed by his placement in a Thai monastery specializing in addiction reform; this attempt failed as well, as Doherty chose to flee back to London rather than persevere.
With the Libertines now keeping active without him, their former frontman created a new musical outlet for himself called Babyshambles -- his motivation apparently being the need to raise money for drugs. His troubles with the law were far from over, and in the summer of 2004 he was charged with possession of a switchblade in his car, followed by several drug and assault charges in 2005. At first, Babyshambles managed to become a going concern despite these entanglements, but the disruption or abrupt cancellation of several important engagements in mid-2005 (including a support slot for Oasis and an appearance at Live 8 in July, an performance at an Oslo festival in August, and sold-out show at Shrewsbury Music Hall in October) have served to reinforce Doherty's reputation for unreliability.
