The gypsy boy Heathcliff is taken in by the Earnshaw family, where he and the daughter Catherine fall in love. But she cannot marry into his lower class; Heathcliff ventures to America and Catherine marries Edgar Linton. Upon his return as a wealthy man Heathcliff marries Edgar's sister Isabella, and proceeds to disrupt all of their lives. Told in flashback by the housekeeper Ellen Dean to a traveler, Lockwood, who believes he has seen a ghost. Story taken largely from the first half of Bront�'s novel. Won Oscar for Best Cinematography; received 7 additional nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Screenplay. Entered 2007 into the National Film Registry.
