REVIEWS

Review by Bill (posted on 29-Mar-2005)

Although this movie was released 9 years ago, I just found this site. Michael Collins is an excellent movie in my opinion. It is one of a small library of films I have purchased so far in the DVD format. I am very choosy how I spend my money and this is one purchase I did not hesitate to make. Liam, Aidan, and several other of actors who have starring parts, all turned in excellent performances. Also, the young lady who played a small part as Rosie, an Irish housemaid, remeains embedded in my brain. I think it was her magical lyrical accent that accounts for this. A very moving and informative piece of history was depicted, and was very well written and directed. Would like to see more movies of this genre.

Review by Christine Turley (posted on 8-Feb-2005)

Michael Collins is a true story based on the man who got the English out of the south of Ireland and his extraordinary story. It is an amazing movie I myself was born and I now grow up in Ireland I have always known the name Michael Collins.

Liam Neeson for some ungodly reason wasn't nominated for an Oscar and despite the film's controversy I believe strongly that he should have won it (which isn't the first time that he's been robbed of an Oscar -- Schindler's List coming to mind). His performance was both moving and enthalling. Other excellent performances were by Aidan Quinn, Stephen Rea and Alan Rickman. Although the latter and Julia Roberts had at times rather apalling Irish accents that is the only complaint I could make.

I was moved to tears at the final scence of his murder juxtaposed with his fiance (Roberts) buying her wedding dress with the beautiful song "Our Wedding Day" performed by Sinead O'Connor playing in the background.

I would recommend this film to anyone. A true hero's story :-)
