Anthony Adverse (29-Jul-1936)

Director: Mervyn LeRoy

Writer: Sheridan Gibney

From novel: Anthony Adverse by Hervey Allen

Music by: Erich Wolfgang Korngold

Keywords: Romantic Drama

An orphan is unknowingly apprenticed to his grandfather, then has adventures in Europe, Cuba and Africa in this lengthy adaptation of Hervey Allen's exceedingly long novel. Gale Sondergaard won the first-ever Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and there was also Oscars awarded for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Score. A good film created with a high budget, but it has not aged well and it is difficult to believe it was nominated for Best Picture.
